The RAISE-FS project continues to make significant strides despite the prevailing security challenges in the Amhara region. A recent training program on Social Analysis and Action (SAA) marked a crucial step towards the social and economic empowerment of women and youth. Fourteen participants from Angot and Gazo woredas, in collaboration with the Sirinka Agricultural Research Center (ARC), underwent an extensive facilitation program on SAA from May 15-19, 2024, in Woldia town. The training aimed to equip participant stakeholders with the knowledge and skills that can help them facilitate discussion and reflection sessions that can lead to meaningful social change in their respective communities, thereby fostering a culture of learning and development.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Akalu Gebru, director of Sirinka ARC, commended the project’s inclusive approach and emphasized the importance of organizing such training programs. He also expressed his hope that participants would acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to drive change within their localities.

Throughout a five-day intensive session, participants were introduced to a variety of SAA tools designed to challenge and reflect upon deeply ingrained social norms, particularly those related to gender issues. The session also provided participants with an opportunity to improve their facilitation skills through role-playing exercises, pair and group work activities, and learning methods. This approach allowed them to gain practical experience using these transformative tools, equipping them to drive social change in their communities.
Participant’s impression
Upon completion of the training, participants from different sectors, including agriculture, health, women, children, and social affairs offices, expressed positive impressions of the facilitation sessions. They highlighted the interactive and participatory nature of the training, emphasizing its relevance not only to their professional roles but also to their personal lives.
“The training session is highly interactive and participatory. We have learned a lot in the five days of the training. I thought that five days would be excessive but it was worthwhile. We have learned lessons that helped us even in our own private lives. Reaching as many people as possible would be good.” Desalew Baye
“We have been given the freedom to express our opinion freely and with confidence. This should be the culture. If other training sessions are organized in this manner, there will be a significant change both in the community and in the country.” Azmera Dessie

Moving forward, participants from specific kebeles will work to facilitate gender-related social norm discussions at the community level, while others will lead staff reflection sessions within their respective offices. This collaborative effort aims to drive social change at both the grassroots and organizational levels.
In conclusion, despite the prevailing security challenges in the Amhara region, the efforts of the regional RAISE-FS team and its implementing partners are truly commendable. Their unwavering commitment to fostering social and economic empowerment is paving the way for a brighter future. As these empowered individuals carry forth their learnings, they carry with them the potential to catalyze lasting and meaningful change within their communities.
