From childhood dreams to agricultural innovation

Growing up inspired by her determined mother, Atsede’s childhood dream was to become a doctor. However, as she became more aware of the challenges of rural poverty and hunger in Ethiopia, her vision shifted toward creating solutions for these pressing issues. Her passion for improving access to food, education, and sustainable livelihoods drove her to excel in agricultural research; a field she entered through determination and curiosity, despite initially knowing little about it.

Dr. Atsede Solomon Retta is a established professional in the field of agricultural research, with a career spanning decade of dedication, innovation, and impact. Her academic journey began with a bachelor’s degree in plant sciences from Alemaya University (now Haramaya University) of Agriculture in 1995. She then pursued her master’s degree in Horticulture at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, India, in 2003, where she gained profound insights into horticultural crops, from production to marketing. In 2019, she achieved her Ph.D. from Addis Ababa University in Plant Biology and Biodiversity Management, focusing her research on sustainable and cost-effective potato disease management.

A passion for empowering farmers

Dr. Atsede’s work has had a profound impact on farmers which she worked with, particularly in the potato seed sector. Her efforts have enabled farmers to access high-quality seed potatoes, boosting yields and incomes. Many farmers have even diversified into new ventures, creating a ripple effect of economic growth and stability. For Dr. Atsede, the most fulfilling part of her work is seeing the transformation in farmers’ lives and contributing to sustainable livelihoods.
