Her professional journey began as an Agribusiness Officer in 2011, where she laid the foundation for her future contributions to the agricultural sector. In 2012, she joined the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), advancing through various roles from Junior Researcher to Senior Researcher over a remarkable 13 years. Currently, Truayinet serves as a Technical Specialist at the International Fertilizer Development Centre (IFDC) in Ethiopia.

Childhood dreams

Growing up in a rural area, Truayinet experienced firsthand the challenges faced by farming communities, including hard labour and limited opportunities. As a child, her dream was simple; to escape the heavy burdens of rural life and create a better future for herself and her family. While she did not initially envision a career in research, her educational journey led her to become an agricultural researcher.

A passion for agricultural research

Truayinet’s personal experiences triggered her motivation to study agriculture and understand the obstacles faced by rural communities. Her career path was guided by a commitment to finding solutions that enhance agricultural systems and improve livelihoods. Through her work in research and development, she has focused on empowering communities, particularly smallholder farmers, with practical techniques to increase productivity and strengthen agricultural practices.

One of Truayinet’s most rewarding experiences was witnessing the impact of her work during field visits. She recalls moments when farmers especially women shared their excitement about improved harvests and newfound confidence in managing their farms. These interactions reinforced her belief in the importance of empowering individuals and families to take control of their livelihoods.

Overcoming challenges

Truayinet’s journey has not been without obstacles. Growing up in a community where science and fieldwork were often considered men’s work, she faced societal stereotypes that could have deterred her aspirations. However, her determination, passion for agriculture, and unwavering support from her mother helped her overcome these barriers. Her mother’s courage and guidance shielded her from early marriage and instilled in her the strength to pursue her dreams.

A moment of doubt

Even during moments of doubt, such as working in districts with limited opportunities for career advancement, Truayinet remained resolute. Her persistence paid off when she secured a position at the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, marking a significant turning point in her professional journey.

Advice to others

To young women aspiring to pursue careers in research, Truayinet encourages them to trust themselves, embrace curiosity, and take advantage of resources such as online courses and training programs to build their skills and confidence. Truayinet also urges decision-makers to create supportive environments where women can thrive. She emphasizes the importance of mentorship, equal opportunities, and flexible policies that empower women and strengthen the research sector.

Personal life

Beyond her professional achievements, Truayinet is married and a proud mother to two daughters and one son. Her dedication to her family mirrors her commitment to creating a better future for communities through agricultural research and development.

We hope Truayinet Mekuriaw’s journey of resilience, passion, and dedication inspire others and pave the way for women in agricultural research to shape a brighter future for generations to come.
